Horror horror everywhere....
First off - Happy New Year!!!! I hope 2006 is a great one for everyone reading this (is there anyone reading this, other than my sister in law?!?!!??!?). My big goal for 06 is to finish both a 1st draft and 2nd draft of my novel. The Borderlands Writers Boot Camp in three weeks will be a big indicator of how much work I have to do. I'm nervous!!
Anyway, it's amazing how much horror "entertainment" I've been incorporating into my 24 hour life - between the job, the kids, my wife, friends...I always make it a goal of finding at least an hour or two each day to read or watch something horror related...Right now I'm reading Douglas Clegg's The Priest of Blood. Loving the book. More on that when I finish it. I'm also reading (on and off) David Morrell's book about writing, called Lessons From a Lifetime of Writing, which is a great read about well, writing a book! Morrell is the man, and the book is great!
A couple months ago I started subscribing to Rue-Morgue, an amazing horror magazine coming out of Canada. It's a competitor to Fangoria, but I think it's better. Rather than focus on the "monster of the month" cover story, Rue Morgue does what I call deeper stories - a huge retrospective on all things Lovecraft, or the 100 greatest horror movies now out on DVD you've never heard of, or an overview of great children's horror books, etc...Each month they review books, tons of DVD's, movies, interviews, etc. The magazine looks good and is a great read. I highly recommend anyone interested in the horror entertainment world to give it a read. http://www.rue-morgue.com/ (the website isn't great, but don't worry about that!). Another magazine I read is Locus, the long running Fantasy/Sci-Fi magazine that does cover Horror. In addition to great interviews and reviews, the magazine does a great job of covering the publishing industry, which means tracking what books were sold, who sold em, who bought em, etc...that will all come in handy when I eventually finish my novel and work up a list of agents to send query letters to.
On the movie front, I recently went on a huge eBay DVD buying spree (thanks to birthday and Hanukkah money) and purchased the following movies, many of which are Asian horror flicks: Shutter, Tale of Two Sisters (2 disc version), Suspiria (3 disc version), The Ugly, Ab-Normal Beauty, Exorcism of Emily Rose (unrated version), Koma, The Changeling, Legend of Hell House, and possibly a few others that I've forgotten about..oh yeah, Seasons 1 and 2 of Danger Mouse :)...So, I have a ton of quality DVD viewing, and hope some if not all of these movies give moe some good ideas for my current and future novels. Obviously not in writing them, but in the storytelling aspects.
So, that's it for now. I'm currently reading and critiquing the submissions from the 20 other authors invited to the Writers Boot Camp - I have about 10 to go, but want to go back and re-read each and provide some more comments. I hope everyone is doing the same for me. And I hope I'm not getting crushed by all the comments - something positive would be nice :)
OK, that's all for now. Nuff said!
